Hill Country Riding Tips

Local knowledge from riders who know these roads

Watch for Wildlife

Deer are everywhere in the Hill Country. They're most active at dawn and dusk but can appear anytime. Reduce speed in wooded areas and stay alert.

Beat the Heat

Texas summers are brutal. Ride early morning or late evening. Always carry water, and don't underestimate dehydration. Temperatures can hit 100°F+.

Gravel in Corners

Ranch roads can have loose gravel, especially on the outside of curves. After rain, debris washes onto the road. Brake before the turn, not in it.

Plan Fuel Stops

Small towns mean limited gas stations. Fill up when you can. The Twisted Sisters has no gas for 100+ miles. Running out is not an adventure you want.

Limited Cell Service

Many routes have spotty or no cell coverage. Download offline maps, tell someone your route, and carry basic tools and a first aid kit.

Bike Prep

Check tire pressure, chain tension, and fluid levels before heading out. These roads will expose any mechanical weaknesses. Get a pre-ride inspection at Refugee Cycles.
